What it is: Defamation covers statements that harm another person's reputation, whether spoken (slander) or published (libel), including insults and false accusations. In the UAE, defamation is a criminal as well as a civil matter, and online defamation is also addressed under the cybercrime law. When it applies: Cases arise from social media posts, messages, emails, reviews or public remarks that a person claims damaged their honour or reputation. Both individuals and businesses may be complainants or defendants. How a lawyer helps: A lawyer assesses whether the statement is legally defamatory, examines context, truth and public-interest considerations, and gathers or challenges digital evidence. For complainants, the lawyer files the complaint and may pursue criminal and civil remedies including compensation. For the accused, the lawyer builds defences and can seek reconciliation or withdrawal of the complaint.
